professional learning institute: nature journaling in the classroom

Join John Muir Laws and Sandi Yellenberg at The Foster to learn how the art and science of nature journaling can work for your classroom!

During this week-long program you will gain direct experience with the art and science of nature journaling and discover how this practice can be used as an engaging pedagogical tool for interdisciplinary instruction that spans science, language, and art.

  • Experience an introduction to the world of nature journaling with naturalist, artist, and educator John Muir Laws. He will lead field experiences designed to help you tune into the wild around you, from the industrial neighborhood surrounding The Foster to one of our region’s beautiful open space preserves.

  • Build connections between your experiences during the institute and content, curriculum, and standards at your grade level with support from Sandi Yellenberg, Science Coordinator for the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

  • Discover additional support opportunities with The Foster, Marine Science Institute, and Environmental Volunteers to help you introduce nature journaling in your classroom next school year.

All experience levels are welcome.

All participants will receive a copy of “How to Teach Nature Journaling”, the new book by John Muir Laws and Emilie Lygren, as well as introductory nature journaling materials.

Daily lunches are included.
