George Mallory was an English mountaineer who participated in the first three British expeditions to Mt. Everest in 1921, 1922, and 1924. Mallory and his climbing partner, Andrew ‘Sandy’ Irvine, did not return from the 1924 expedition, having lost their lives on Mt. Everest on June 8 of that year.

This exhibition celebrates the life of Magdalene College alumnus George Mallory and features original materials from the Magdalene College Archives. Presenting George Mallory's newly digitized letters to his wife Ruth, the exhibition brings to life his time as a student at Magdalene, his experiences serving in the British Army in France during WWI, his time on the three expeditions to Everest, and his lecture tour in the United States.

Artworks by Tony Foster loaned for this exhibition depict the East and North faces of Mt. Everest in Tibet, following the approach routes taken by George Mallory over his three expeditions. All the paintings were created at high altitude en plein air in 2007.

Note: Visitors are requested to stop in at The Porters' Lodge in First Court on Magdalene Street to arrange access before visiting The Robert Cripps Gallery. Visitors are welcome in The Robert Cripps Gallery and Pepys Library in Magdalene College.

Since 2007, Tony has been developing his 19th Journey with a complex idea as its foundation: Time. Foster is developing a series of works that explore both a macro and micro look at time and how it affects, sculpts, and alters the land, from brief changes in weather and light to seasonal changes to biological and geological time. He states his motivation:

“I want to draw attention to the unseen forces that create place.”

ArtBox

year-round exhibitions of local Cornwall artisans in Tywardreath, England

In Tony’s home village of Tywardreath, an abandoned telephone box has been transformed into one of the world’s smallest art galleries. British Telecom’s classic red kiosks are now obsolete because of cell phones. But Tony, along with two of his friends, Roshni Tamang Mitchell and Dana Roberts, saw opportunity in the one situated on a main thoroughfare in their community and leased the phone box for £1 (one pound) to establish a non-profit-making venture. Since May of 2019 they have mounted a series of small and wonderful exhibitions in the phone box for passersby to enjoy. From the initial exhibition that was a tribute to John Lobb, a 19th century Tywardreath farm labourer who went on to become Royal Bootmaker to a more recent installation of found objects from Tony’s own journeys, this relic has become a source of discovery, fun and education for the community.
